About me

Hi!  Welcome to my web site.

My name is Tom Marchant.  I live in South Lyon with my three children.

I have been working in the computer business since 1970, and I bought my first computer in 1976.  It was a KIM-1 evaluation board for the MOS Technology 6502 processor, which would later be used in the Comodore PET and 64, the Apple II and computers and game consoles from Atari, as well as others.

My second computer was an Atari 800, then an Atari 520 ST.  My first (sort of) IBM-compatible computer was also the first "palm-top" computer, the Atari Portfolio.  About the size of a VHS video cassette, I bought it in 1990 and carried it with me for years.

I have been working with personal computers since the beginning.  Frankly, I have never been favorably impressed with Microsoft products.  When I bought my first real IBM-compatible desktop in 1995, I also bought OS/2 and installed it in dual boot mode.  My oldest son, Julian, was not quite two years old at the time and he learned to use both windows and OS/2 as he grew up.

Now we have Linux installed on our computers.  Sometimes we still boot Windows on them because there is some program that won't work well in Linux.  We prefer to use Linux when we are on the Internet though because it is far safer.
